Dr. John D. Bullough, FIES

John D. Bullough, Ph.D., FIES directs research in the areas of transportation lighting and safety at the Light and Health Research Center, part of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in Albany, NY. Dr. Bullough's research work deals largely with roadway, vehicle and aviation lighting, signage and other visual guidance information, and the interactions of these systems with safety-related perception and behavior. Bullough earned his Ph.D. in multidisciplinary science in 2004 and his M.S. in lighting in 1999, both from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Bullough is as associate editor of Leukos, the journal of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), and he edits Optical Radiation News, published by the Council for Optical Radiation Measurements (CORM), and formerly served as editor of Lighting Futures for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He also serves on the editorial boards of the Interdisciplinary Journal of Signage and Wayfinding and of Transport, and is a handling editor for Transportation Research Record. He has written or co-written about 500 articles and technical publications in lighting, visual performance, glare, mesopic vision and visual guidance, more than 100 of these with student co-authors. Dr. Bullough has served as primary investigator for studies sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Transportation Research Board (TRB) of the National Academies, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), the Fire Protection Research Foundation of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the James McClung Lighting Research Foundation and the Sign Research Foundation.

In addition to his participation on the Academic Advisory Council for Signage Research and Education (AACSRE), Dr. Bullough also serves as a member of the Committee on Human Factors in Infrastructure Operations and Design and was a recent Chair of the Committee on Visibility for the Transportation Research Board (TRB) of the National Academies, and is currently Vice-President of CORM. In 2005, he was elected a Fellow of the IES in recognition of his contributions to safety related to lighting, traffic signals and signage. Bullough also serves as a member of the Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE), and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
