AN INVITATION TO PUBLISH –SPECIAL ISSUE
Free Speech, Sense of Place, Communication, Economic Development:
Signage in the Contemporary City
The Interdisciplinary Journal of Signage and Wayfinding is pleased to issue a call for papers for a special issue on the topic of: “Free Speech, Sense of Place, Communication, Economic Development: Signage in the Contemporary City.” Signage serve a critical role in human settlements for free speech, public and private communication, wayfinding, economic development and creating a sense of place. Virtually every US city has sign regulations of some type, yet many are based on little more than whims and opinions, and seemingly unaware of the benefits of informed planning approaches. This issue will present emerging planning research on the evolving issues of sign regulation, and the need for more informed understanding of context and place in the design and regulation of on-premise signage. This issue will be curated by Special Issue Editor Dr. Chris Auffrey, Professor of Planning at the University of Cincinnati. Articles must be uploaded at ijsw.share.ok.org on or before October 1, 2017. This issue will be published on December 31, 2017.
Articles from all disciplines will be considered for publication. Authors will be expected to utilize the writing and citation conventions appropriate for publication in their discipline. This journal will also print reproductions of important scholarly articles to the extent that the author may obtain permission for the same. The journal contains both academic articles and reports prepared by practitioners. The content of each will be subject to double blind peer review. The editor will assign articles received to academics and/or practitioners in the related field of study. These reviewers will include, among others, the members of the Academic Advisory Council for Sign Education and Research. Please submit questions to Journal Editor Dawn Jourdan: dawn@aacsre.org. You are also welcome to call for additional information: 816-739-4416.
